I believe CEP vendors and researchers have good job of marketing the technology and as a result the business understands and is convinced of it’s potential.
But unfortunately we are yet to go long way to realize the practical benefits from this. This is true from the aspect that it does not come with built in ready made solutions to solve a specific problem.
Business and Technogy has to come together to understand what problems can be solved and what opportunities can be created. Until this CEP will be just like an illusion.

Hari is right. That’s the reason for our project DoReMoPat (Domain Specific Reference Models for Event Patterns) which we’ll submit to the 7th EC Framework. http://www.citt-online.com/downloads/ReferenceModelsEventPatterns_with_Appendix_v3.pdf

A good way to test where a technology is in its maturity is to look at how much revenue the software is generating. From that perspective, CEP is close to microscopic. Looking at some of the surrounding markets — measured by revenue and adoption — it is the least mature technology within an EDA.
What makes a market interesting is whether it has the opportunity to be game changing within reasonable period of time, say 5 years.
So, it is fair to say that CEP is tiny but very interesting.

i believe CEP and ven EDA are still very early on the hype cycle, my vote is Technology Trigger. it has been in my opinion in that phase for atleast 3-4 years already. i wrote a paper on Event Driven Process and Performance Management late 2002. the link can be found here:

the need to accelrate it up the curve can only be met i think when business solutions can be architected and delivered cost effectively leveraging CEP.
